Raised in a conventional medical family by a father who was a practicing MD for more than 50 years, I was set to follow in his footsteps and attend medical school. As a teenager I worked in his office, filing paperwork, interacting with patients, and getting a glimpse “behind the curtain.” Around this time, I was first introduced to chiropractic by coincidence. A friend who had been injured in a motor vehicle accident needed a ride to her chiropractic appointments. At the time, I was completely unfamiliar with chiropractic and like with most things unfamiliar I was very skeptical. I still agreed to take my friend to her appointments since her vehicle had been wrecked. This was my first exposure to chiropractic and coming from a conventional medical family, I had a lot of questions. Fortunately, the chiropractor was friendly enough to take the time to answer my questions. I learned about chiropractic, how it helps people heal from injuries, prevents injuries from worsening and even sometimes prevents people from needing surgery. I witnessed my friend recover from whiplash injury and thus began my journey.
As I worked toward my undergraduate degree at Marshall University, I shadowed many chiropractors and absorbed as much information as they would offer. Hearing their many success stories with their patients helped nudge my still somewhat skeptical mind to decide to go to chiropractic school. Completing my BS degree in Biology, I then immersed myself in the extremely rigorous chiropractic curriculum. During my last trimester of chiropractic school, a nutrition professor noticed my growing curiosity in the nutrition realm and suggested trying a post-doctoral level nutrition course. At first, I wondered why in the world would I want to go through MORE schooling? Am I a glutton for punishment? Aren’t there already well-qualified professionals who help people make decisions about their diets? Wasn’t I taught everything I needed in doctor school? Or is it possible this could add another layer in helping people regain their health?
After my first post-doctoral nutrition class, I realized another passion. I also realized I am a glutton for punishment, spending countless hours studying for the post-doctoral classes. This additional passion carried me through the program and I earned my Master of Science degree in Human Nutrition. Afterward, I pursued an intensive training program, culminating in the achievement of my diplomate status with the American Clinical Board of Nutrition, thus attaining board certification as a clinical nutritionist.
Sadly, at this same time my father suffered from health issues that forced his retirement from his medical practice. The Parkinson’s symptoms progressed quickly as we did what we could to aid and comfort him. It was very difficult watching the symptoms of this disease take over. It is a helpless feeling I will never forget. Since his passing I have been haunted by the question “could I have done anything else to help dad’s symptoms and condition?”. While I know we can’t go back, I bring that same perspective to every patient in my own practice.
Several years ago, I experienced a severe reaction to an antibiotic that left me bed-ridden for 10 weeks. Although this was an extremely difficult time and I was in constant terrible pain, I felt blessed for having my training, experience, and ability to utilize “non-conventional” options. I did eventually recover and have avoided major physical permanent disabilities which I attribute to non-conventional therapeutics. Over the past 17 years in practice, it has been a privilege to witness how these non-conventional approaches help so many people in so many ways. Providing quality chiropractic care and functional medicine care, and making that care as affordable and accessible as possible to everyone who needs it is my main passion that continues to grow with each success story.
